Prepare Your Negatives For Scanning & Sending.

Here are a few tips to help us get the best digital scans from your negative film.

How to Send Your Negatives
  • Send your negatives in envelopes, paper sleeves or secure bundles.
  • Keep negatives protected from dust in clean envelopes or paper sleeves to help reduce dust and loose particles.
  • If you would like your digital images organised into named folders, include the folder names or numbering with your order. Named folders are £1.00 each.
Please Avoid Sending
  • Badly damaged, mouldy or excessively dirty negatives — please contact us first so we can advise whether they can be safely scanned.
  • APS film — unfortunately, we are unable to scan APS negatives.
  • Individual 35mm negative frames can be scanned, but are charged at 70p per frame due to the additional handling required.
  • Negatives in plastic archival sleeves — please remove them before sending where possible. If we need to remove and re-insert them, a £2.00 handling charge per page applies.

Why Use a Professional Negative Scanning Service?

Negatives often contain more detail than the prints originally made from them, so scanning the original film can produce excellent digital images. Once digitised, photographs that may have been sitting unseen in envelopes or boxes for years can be viewed again, enlarged, copied and shared with family. For further guidance on preserving photographic materials, the Library of Congress provides useful advice on the care, handling and storage of photographs.

Film negatives can also deteriorate over time. Dust, scratches, fingerprints, damp and poor storage can all affect their condition. Creating high-resolution digital copies means the images are preserved even if the original negatives become damaged in the future.

At PicSave, we scan negatives at 3200 dpi as standard and make colour and contrast adjustments to each image. The finished files are ready to view, store, back up and share, while your original negatives are returned safely to you.
